Winter Carnival Day 1: Your computer

Welcome to ELT Winter Carnival 2023! It's Day 1 and we are so excited to begin a whole week of technology learning and fun!!

This year, we have a different technology-related topic each day. Each topic will be posted about on the Quick Bytes blog. We will dig into the topic at three levels--beginner, intermediate, and advanced. You can pick your level, no need to do all 3!

Are you wondering if you'll be able to keep up this week? No problem there, everything will stay posted past Winter Carnival.

Day 1: Your computer and Windows

Level 1: Basic Windows tips

The Extension technology core skill 11, Understands basic Windows operating systems functions has many great training resources for learning basic Windows skills. Take some time today to go through this section, I guarantee you'll learn something and be happier with your computer because of it!

I'll just highlight a few of my favorite tips!

Level 2: Get ready for Windows 11

I (Amy) recently got Windows 11 on my new laptop and wanted to let you know what's different, and what's not. New Extension laptops are now being set up with Windows 11, so you may already have it!

I have not noticed much difference between Windows 10 and 11. There are a couple of positives I've noticed:

  • Windows Updates seem to be much more automatic. I think this is a setting the University has changed, but I like it! I used to have to remember to check manually for updates once in a while.
  • The Start Menu is quite different, but I like the changes. Fewer tiles that look like ads.

  • Windows Snap Layouts--if you like snapping Windows, you'll like this.

So do not dread the changing of Windows from 10 to 11 when it happens to you. It's not a big change! For more information, see Microsoft's What's New with Windows 11.

Level 3: Hardware Setup Tips, from Billie

The easiest way to get to know and like your laptop is to customize your desktop the way you like and get rid of applications and icons you don't use:

  • Task Bar - you can customize your task bar by right click on the task bar at the bottom of your screen (or 2 finger tap on the track pad) and go into Taskbar Settings. You can turn off Chat and other unused icons, and add the ones you use as well as move the Start button back to the left if that what you like.
  • It's also nice to have those default applications already set to be the Default!  In the search or tap your Windows key, type "default app" and hit enter. You can search out Chrome and set as default browser, as well as your mail too.
  • Another helpful setting is the Power & Sleep settings, these by default are set low but can be adjust depending on how and where you work most.

Get in the spirit with our swag bag of goodies!

The swag bag of goodies includes a Spotify playlist, amazing recipes, Zoom background, Windows desktop wallpaper and a flat IT Goldy that can be used for "photos with IT Goldy"!

There are two activities every day to score points. The leaderboard will be updated at the end of the day. Participants will be celebrated at Friday's IT Goldy's Winter Carnival Celebration at 11 a.m. Please register if you can attend.

Today's activities!

1. WORDLE of the day. Do it for fun and if you want to collect 5 points for playing, copy/paste your results in the Ext Connect Slack #elt-winter-carnival channel.

2. Find the medallion. A new medallion is hidden each day. By the end of the week there will be a total of five clues and five hidden virtual medallions. Medallions may be hidden on this blog, the Core Skills website, Extension Intranet, etc. If you are stumped, you can try asking for a hint in the #elt-winter-carnival Slack channel! Earn 10 points for each medallion you find.

When you find a medallion, fill out this Google Form to let us know!
