Find emails quickly with Gmail power search

Searching for a specific email can be frustrating with endless scrolling, trial-and-error keywords, and getting pages of irrelevant results. Instead of wasting time manually scrolling through your inbox, try some Gmail power search operators to find exactly what you need.

Search operators for your inbox

Type any of these search commands directly into the search bar at the top of your Inbox:

Find specific file types: 

filename:pdf or filename:xlsx

Narrow down your search to specific document types like .pdf, .xlsx or .pptx

Google Workspace Files: has:spreadsheet or has:document

Find Google Sheets or Docs shared by colleagues without sorting through message text.

Filter by Sender Domain: from:@umn.edu


Restrict results to official University communications and campus updates.

Search by Date Ranges: newer_than:7d or older_than:1y


Look for recent emails from the past week or clear out older messages during an inbox cleanout.

Combine Operators: from:username@umn.edu has:attachment


Stack commands together to find a specific attachment sent by a specific person.
