Create and name a Google Doc in one step

Most of us are familiar with typing doc.new in the Chrome address bar to create a new Google Doc. It is a great time-saver, but it can sometimes create a number of "Untitled Documents" to rename or delete later. Thanks to a tip I recently read in a newsletter, I just learned you can create AND name your doc in one step. No more renaming files after the fact! Here’s how:

Set up the shortcut in Chrome:

  1. Type chrome://settings/searchEngines in your Chrome address bar and press Enter
  2. Under the Site search section, click Add
  3. Enter the following in the fields:
  4. Click Save

Use the shortcut:

Whenever you want to create and name a new Google Doc:
  1. Type newdoc in the address bar (don't hit enter just yet)
  2. Press space (or tab)
  3. Type the name of your new document and press Enter
The document location will default to My Drive. To move it to another location, click the Move button at the top.
