Split names and other data in Google Sheets

If you ever copy and paste data into a spreadsheet, you will likely end up with data in one cell that needs to be split into multiple cells. An example is separating first and last names, or splitting an address into separate cells. Here's how:

  1. Select the cells you want to split
  2. Click Data > Split text to columns
  3. To select which character is used to split the data, click the menu next to Separator > Detect automatically
