Winter Carnival Day 3: Digital accessibility

Winter Carnival day 3 - Digital Accessibility

Digital accessibility

Digital accessibility is a topic that can make even a seasoned professional a bit nervous. If you can relate, take heart: that means you want to get it right. And there are more and more resources to help! Consider how much time you have today (and in the coming weeks or months) and decide what you can do to learn more and be able to do better each day.

Don't forget to read to the end for today's activities.

level 1

Check out "Accessible U" to learn about cultivating inclusion. As you explore this site and learn more about digital accessibility, you may wonder what action you can take to create a more accessible U. Spend time reviewing digital accessibility core skills page, where you'll learn practical skills you can put to use righ away.

level 2

If you haven’t already done so, please schedule an hour to complete the digital accessibility foundations course. It is extremely valuable information, and the prerequisite for all of the Digital Accessibility badging program courses.

Digital Accessibility Foundations: [1 hour, self-paced online] In this course, participants will learn what digital accessibility means, why it matters, and how it can be incorporated into their daily work. It is a prerequisite for the Digital Accessibility Badging Program; however, it does not carry its own badge.

level 3

Once you’ve completed the accessibility foundations course, consider also scheduling time to take the Create Accessible Documents course. It is only slightly longer than the first course, it offers a badge, and it will truly give you the groundwork you need to build accessibility into everything you create.

Create Accessible Documents: [1.5 hours, self-paced online] In this course, participants will create a document that is accessible to the largest possible number of readers, using either Google Docs or Microsoft Word. Learners may submit their work in this course in order to earn the Accessible Documents badge as part of the Digital Accessibility Badging Program. This course is a prerequisite for anyone who wishes to take Digital Accessibility: Create Accessible PDFs.

Today's activities!

An extra 20 points will be given for sharing a photo with Flat IT Goldy in the ExtConnect Slack #elt-winter-carnival channel one time during this week.

1. WORDLE of the day. Do it for fun and if you want to collect 5 points for playing, copy/paste your results in the ExtConnect Slack #elt-winter-carnival channel.

2. Find the medallion. A new medallion is hidden each day. By the end of the week there will be a total of five clues and five hidden virtual medallions. Medallions may be hidden on this blog, the Core Skills website, Extension Intranet, etc. If you are stumped, you can try asking for a hint in the #elt-winter-carnival Slack channel! Earn 10 points for each medallion you find.

When you find a medallion, fill out this Google Form to let us know!
